Wu Yuzhang, a revolutionary old man, spoke highly of Comrade Zhao Shiyan, the leader of the workers 'movement in our country, in his poem "Remembering Martyr Zhao Shiyan". "Shi Ying" is the pseudonym Zhao Shiyan used when writing articles in party and trade union publications. Zhao Shiyan was born in Longtan, Xiyang, Sichuan in 1901. He was talented and intelligent. At the age of 15, he was admitted to Beijing Normal University Affiliated High School. In 1917, Zhao Shiyan met Li Dazhao and began his revolutionary career. In 1920, he was introduced by Chen Duxiu and joined the Shanghai Communist Group. Later, he went to France to work and study. Together with Zhou Enlai and other comrades, he formed the Communist Group in Europe, and served as the first secretary of the General Branch of the Communist Party of China in Europe. In March 1923, in accordance with the decision of the Communist International and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Zhao Shiyan went to the Soviet Union to study and attended the Fifth Congress of the Communist International with Li Dazhao. After returning to China in 1924, he and Li Dazhao led various anti-imperialist and anti-warlord movements among Beijing citizens and students, and led general strikes by workers in Tianjin, Kailuan and other places. Later, Zhao Shiyan went to Shanghai, pseudonym Shi Ying, and together with Zhou Enlai, commanded three armed workers 'uprisings in Shanghai. On April 12, 1927, Chiang Kai-shek launched the "April 12" counter-revolutionary coup in Shanghai. Trade unions and mass organizations were closed down, and many outstanding Communist Party members were massacred. Under the leadership of comrades Zhao Shiyan and Luo Yinong, the Shanghai party organization quickly turned underground activities. Soon after, the Fifth Congress of the Party was held in Wuhan, and Zhao Shiyan was elected as a member of the Party Central Committee. At that time, white terror shrouded Shanghai. In late June, the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee was damaged. On July 2, as traitor Han Buxian gave up Zhao Shiyan's residence, enemy spies came to his house to wait. In Longhua Prison, the enemy used various types of torture on Zhao Shiyan. But he was always unyielding and fought bravely. On the early morning of July 19, 1927, the Kuomintang reactionaries killed Comrade Zhao Shiyan by Fenglin Bridge. In front of the executioner's knife, Comrade Zhao Shiyan held his head high, shouted slogans, and sacrificed heroically. He was only 27 years old at the time.
