Suharto On June 8, 1921, former President of the Republic of Indonesia, General Suharto, was born in Yogyakarta, Central Java. Suharto studied at the Indonesian Army Staff and Command School. He joined the Dutch Colonial Army in 1940 and served in the Indonesian Army under Japanese occupation in 1943. After 1945, he was gradually promoted to the commander of the Yogyakarta Military District in 1950. He took over the Indonesian government after the September 30 incident in 1965. On March 11, 1966, he was authorized by Sukarno to act as president. In the same year, he was promoted to army general. He officially became president on March 21, 1968. During his reign, he formulated the "Foreign Investment Law" and introduced a large number of foreign capital. In 1969, the first five-year plan was implemented, and the national economy grew significantly. It resumed diplomatic relations with China on August 8, 1990. Affected by the financial turmoil in South East Asia and the turmoil in the domestic situation, Suharto resigned in May 1998 and was succeeded by Vice President Habibi.
