On May 19, 1921, the United States promulgated the immigration law
104 years ago today, on May 19, 1921 (April 12, 1921), the United States enacted an immigration law. At the end of the nineteenth century, the rapid increase in immigration to the United States triggered the largest wave of immigration in history. The influx of large numbers of immigrants caused fear and anxiety in American society, and the xenophobic tendency in the United States to limit immigration was increasing. On May 19, 1921, President Harding signed the Immigration Act. The act stipulated that the amount of immigration should be limited to 3% of the number of foreign-born groups in the United States in 1910. After the implementation of the immigration law, the number of immigrants coming to the United States decreased rapidly.
