Nicholas Poussin's "David's Victory" Nicolas Poussin (June 15, 1594-November 19, 1665) was an important French painter of the Baroque period in the 17th century. "The Shepherd of Alkadi" is his masterpiece. It is often referred to simply as Pousan. Born in Les Andelys, Normandy, France, he was a descendant of aristocrats; when he was young, he learned from two painters, Quentin Varin and Jouvenet. He had been to Paris and was deeply influenced by Raphael's classical painting style. In 1621, he painted murals for the Luxembourg Palace and made several friends, namely the painter Philipp de Champagne and the Italian poet Marino. Knight.
