Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The Armistice Agreement of Indochina was signed on July 20, 1954
On July 20, 1954 (the 21st of the sixth lunar month), the Indochina Armistice Agreement was signed.
The Agreements on the Cancellations of Hostilities in Indo-China were signed in Geneva on July 20, 1954 between France and North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Participants also included China, the Soviet Union, and the United States. The Armistice Agreement of Indochina stipulates that France will cease hostilities in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and establish a ceasefire throughout Indochina. The French government will respect the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and withdraw its troops from Indochina. Vietnam will draw a temporary military demarcation line south of the 17th parallel and establish a demilitarized zone; the three countries will hold free elections respectively, independence and reunification on a democratic basis; the three countries will not participate in any military alliance, and no other country should establish military bases on its territory and not interfere in its internal affairs; establish an international monitoring and supervision committee, with India, Canada and Poland as its members. In August 1954, the war in French Indochina ended, and Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia declared their independence. However, the delay in holding free elections in North Vietnam led to a long-term division between the two countries. And the United States did not sign, only to "allow the agreement to be carried out without threat."
