Forty-six years ago today, September 27, 1979 (August 7, 1979 in the lunar calendar), the World Tourism Organization established World Tourism Day. In 1971, the predecessor of the World Tourism Organization, the International Union of Official Tourism Organizations, proposed the idea of creating World Tourism Day based on the views of official tourism organizations of African countries. After a lot of preparatory work, in September 1979, the 3rd General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization officially decided that September 27 was "World Tourism Day". The date was chosen to commemorate the adoption of the constitution of the World Tourism Organization at the special congress of the International Union of Official Tourism Organizations in Mexico City on September 27, 1970. In addition, this day happened to be just after the tourist season in the Northern Hemisphere and just before the tourist season in the Southern Hemisphere, that is, it was a good time for people all over the world to take a vacation. The World Tourism Organization has proposed a slogan for the annual World Tourism Day to highlight the focus of tourism promotion. The theme of the 1980 World Tourism Goals was: "Tourism contributes to peace and mutual understanding to preserve cultural heritage." In October 1983, China was accepted as a full member of the World Tourism Organization. Since then, around September 27 every year, China has also carried out commemorative activities to commemorate World Tourism Day.
