Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The first British Prime Minister, Robert Walpole, was born
Robert Walpole During his tenure as prime minister, Walpole served in two dynasties: George I and George II. He first gained real power due to the South China Sea Bubble incident in 1721, and then dominated the political situation for about 20 years, but later lost power due to the war against Spain. It is generally believed that Walpole's term of prime minister began when he became the first chancellor of the exchequer in 1721; however, some people believe that his prime minister's term officially began after Viscount Townsend, a key cabinet minister, resigned in 1730 and Walpole went on to fully lead the cabinet; however, most people choose the former as the starting point of his prime minister's career. Walpole did not resign until 1742, becoming the longest-serving British prime minister in history. During his tenure as prime minister, Walpole tried to avoid foreign war and maintained a low tax policy to protect Britain from the effects of the European War and maintain economic prosperity and stability. Under his personal influence, George II trusted Walpole very much, and the power of his Whig Party continued to consolidate and became a major political party in Britain. Walpole's strong governance stems from his personal influence, more than the influence of his official position. Therefore, the influence of the prime ministers who followed him is dwarfed by comparison.
