On December 23, 1999, a mutiny occurred in Cote d'Ivoire and the government was overthrown
On this day 26 years ago, on December 23, 1999 (November 16, 1999 lunar calendar), a mutiny took place in Côte d'Ivoire and the government was overthrown. The mutinous soldiers drove military vehicles and rampaged through the streets. At noon on December 23, 1999, soldiers robbed a large commercial center at gunpoint in Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d'Ivoire. At around 3 pm, the soldiers occupied the national television and radio station. It is said that they are soldiers of the former peacekeeping force in Central Africa who mutinied because the government owed their salaries. But it is strange that both the police and the gendarmerie said that they received orders from their superiors not to intervene and not to clash with the mutinous soldiers. This brings to mind that former President Boigny's approach to a mutiny was to play hard to get, and wait until the soldiers had had enough and tired, and then satisfy their demands, and the situation subsided. On the morning of December 24, President Bédié rushed back to Abidjan to negotiate with the mutineers. The mutineers demanded the release of the imprisoned opposition leader, but the president refused, and the negotiations reached an impasse. The soldiers then occupied Abidjan International Airport, opened Abidjan Prison and released all opposition leaders and political prisoners, while more than 6,500 prisoners from the prison also escaped. At noon, General Gaye, the chief of staff of the former Ivorian army, who had been dismissed by President Bédié, appeared on the TV screen and said three simple sentences: Bédié is no longer the president; dissolve the government, parliament, constitutional committee and other powers; and soon establish a "Republican Public Salvation Committee". On the morning of December 25, Gaye announced the establishment of a "Republican Public Salvation Committee" composed of 10 military officers and said that he would restore democratic order. In the afternoon, the TV broadcast footage of the speeches of the main leaders of the former ruling party and various military services supporting the government, especially the No. 2 person of the former ruling party also began to change in the direction of supporting the coup soldiers. In view of the volatile situation in Abidjan, the French government announced that it would send more than 40 additional troops from Libreville, the capital of Gabon, to Abidjan, and 300 troops to Dakar to be on standby, in order to protect the safety of the French diaspora if needed. General Gay also issued an order to kill the looters during the curfew the next day, and sure enough, the situation was much calmer that night. At around 1 p.m. on December 26, a helicopter took off from the 43rd Infantry Battalion of France in Côte d'Ivoire, bringing the family of ousted Ivorian President Bedi Egypt to Lomé, the capital of Togo. The government's Prime Minister Duncan, Defense Minister Ngata, and Security Minister Koné, who had taken refuge in the French barracks with Bédié, also arrived in Lomé that night to join Bédié. On the 27th, Bédié left Lomé for Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. At this point, the military coup in Côte d'Ivoire came to an end. On December 27, General Gaye announced that the "Public Salvation Committee of the Republic" would form a new cabinet. This series of actions by the military, coupled with the departure of Bédié, strengthened the position of General Gaye's new strongman. The deposed president Bédié's mutinous soldiers confiscated luxury cars on the street. Brief Introduction to the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire
