On this day, 80 years ago, August 16, 1945 (July 9, 1945 in the lunar calendar), the August Revolution in Vietnam began. In September 1940, Japan invaded Vietnam, and the Vietnam people launched a struggle against Japan and France. In June 1941, the Vietnam Independence League (referred to as the Vietnam League) was established to unite the people of the country, carry out armed struggle, and establish a revolutionary base in northern Vietnam. At the beginning of 1945, the Anti-Japanese and National Salvation Movement gradually reached a climax, and the Jiefang District controlled by the Communist Party and the Vietnam League gradually expanded. With the world anti-fascist war about to be won, the Vietnam League issued an uprising order on August 12, 1945. From August 13 to 15, the Communist Party held a national conference in Xinchao, Xuanguang Province, and decided to concentrate its forces, unify actions and command, and launch an uprising in a timely manner. On August 15, Japan surrendered. From August 16 to 17, the Vietnam Independence League held a National Convention in Xinhao, proposing ten major policies of seizing power, establishing a Democratic Republic of Vietnam on the basis of complete independence, arming the people and implementing democratic reforms. It elected the National Liberation Council chaired by Ho Chi Minh and the Uprising Committee chaired by Vo Nguyen Ghat, and decided to seize national power from the Japanese army before the Allied Forces entered Vietnam. The people of Hejing and Guangyi provinces were the first to launch uprisings. On August 16 of the same year, the Vietnam Liberation Army captured Taiyuan and kicked off the uprising. On August 19, the people of Hanoi revolted and seized power. On August 23, the ancient capital of Hue Uprised, and on the 25th, the great southern city of Saigon Uprising won one after another. From August 17 to 28, 60 provinces and cities across the country revolted and established a new regime from south to north. On the 27th, the National Assembly of Vietnam decided to establish the interim government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and elected Ho Chi Minh as chairman. On the 30th, Bao Da, the last emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, announced his abdication in Hue. The August Revolution was won nationwide. On September 2, Ho Chi Minh, on behalf of the interim government, read out the "Declaration of Independence" at the celebration meeting in Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, announcing the overthrow of 80 years of colonial rule and thousands of years of feudal autocracy, the abolition of all French privileges in Vietnam, and the declaration of independence of Vietnam and the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
