Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On August 27, 1980, Chun Doo-hwan became the President of South Korea
On this day, 45 years ago, on August 27, 1980 (July 17, 1980 lunar calendar), Chun Doo-hwan became the president of South Korea. Infighting broke out in the South Korean government. Kim Jae-kyu, the Minister of Central Intelligence, shot President Park Chung-hee at a banquet. Park was killed on the spot, and Prime Minister Choi Kyu-ha became acting president. As soon as he went to work on May 27, 1980, the leading figures of South Korean politics gathered in the Blue House in Seoul for a state meeting. The meeting was chaired by President Choi Kyu-ha. The career diplomat was "a yes man". He became president on December 6, 1979 after Park Chung-hee was killed. At the meeting on this day, he declared explicitly: "This State Council meeting is mainly to consider General Chun Doo-hwan's proposal to establish a'National Defense Unusual Countermeasures Committee '." Then he explained the basis and importance of establishing this committee. After nearly two hours of deliberation, no objections were raised, so Cui Guixia announced "unanimous approval". At 10 am, the meeting went to another agenda: Cui Guixia granted "commissions" to 24 "extraordinary countermeasures committees" and appointed Chun Doo-hwan as the chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National Defense Unusual Countermeasures Committee. At this time, the State Council completed its mission. After Chun Doo-hwan became the chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National Defense Unusual Countermeasures Committee, he was naturally very happy. He placed more than two dozen cronies in the upper echelons of the Ministry of Intelligence, and then on June 2, he took the initiative to tender to Choi Kyusha to resign as acting director of the Central Intelligence Department in order to focus on consolidating his acquired power. The National Defense Extraordinary Countermeasures Committee is a coordinating body between the Military Control Command and the government. It is nominally an "advisory" and "assistant" body to the president, but in fact it is a "super government." The Standing Committee, chaired by Chun Doo-hwan, is ostensibly a subordinate unit of the Countermeasures Committee, but in fact it is a real authority. This committee consists of thirteen subcommittees that are counterpart to the cabinet ministries, and are in charge of much more business and power than the counterpart ministries. In addition, the Standing Committee also has a branch office, which is directly under the chairperson, and has a secretary's office, liaison officers responsible for liaising with the various militaries, and an advisory committee. Thus, Chun Doo-hwan has become the de facto number one person in South Korea. On the morning of Aug. 6, Choe Kyu-ha conferred the rank of General Chun Doo-hwan at the presidential palace and personally wore him a new rank collar. On that morning, Chun Doo-hwan attended the breakfast prayer meeting for the first time, which was broadcast live on the government-controlled television network. On the same afternoon, Chun Doo-hwan again pretended to inspect the situation of rural flooding, which is usually the kind of thing Park Chung-hee did as president in the past. In an Aug. 9 interview with The New York Times, Mr. Chun, who rose to power in South Korea nine months after Mr. Park's death, said South Korea "clearly needs leaders who will lead and control the military" and "a new generation of leaders," a clear hint that he was willing to succeed Mr. Choi as president. He arrested Kim Jae-gyu, sentenced him to death, and avenged his mentor. He privately dispatched troops, captured Zheng Seung-wha at night, purged the army's differences, and seized military power. Then he wielded a butcher's knife, massacred Gwangju, and brutally suppressed the patriotic democratic movement of the Korean people. At the same time, he took advantage of the situation, issued a new "martial law", attacked actual and potential political opponents, got rid of Kim Jong-mi, and killed Kim Dae-jung, clearing the way for the implementation of military dictatorship. So far, Chun Doo-hwan has completed the trilogy of usurping power. Originally, according to the political agenda announced by Cui Kyu-ha, the constitution was revised in 1980, and a general election was held in the first half of the following year to form a new government and officially transfer power. However, Chun Doo-hwan was so anxious that he kicked out the nominal president Choi Kyu-ha and announced his retirement, removing his armor and dressing as a "civilian officer." On August 16, 1980, he coerced President Choi Kyu-ha to step down; on August 27, he ordered his royal body, the National Assembly of Unification Subjects, to elect himself as president, thus ascending to the throne of supreme power in South Korea.
