In 1898, he was admitted to Changsha Current Affairs School and studied from Liang Qichao and Tan Sitong. He went to Japan to study in 1899. The following year, he returned to China with Tang Caichang and others and participated in the starting of the Free Army. He went to Japan to study at the non-commissioned officer school again in defeat. During his study abroad, he published articles in the "Qing Yi Daily" and "Xinmin Cong Daily". Returned to China in 1904 and trained the new army in Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi and other places. In early 1911, he was transferred to Yunnan and served as the 36th Association of the 19th Town of the After the Wuchang Uprising broke out, on October 30, he and Li Genyuan, the general manager of Yunnan Jiaowu Hall, raised troops in Kunming to respond. On November 1, a military government was established, and he served as the governor of Yunnan, and Tang Jiyao was sent to enter Guizhou, and Tang took over as the governor of Guizhou. In October 1913, he was transferred to Beijing by Yuan Shikai and served as the vice president of the editing and translation office of the Ministry of the Army, but he was under surveillance. In October 1915, he sneaked out of Beijing and planned anti-Yuan with Liang Qichao and others in Tianjin. In December, he returned to Kunming to organize the National Defense Army to discuss Yuan and declare Yunnan's independence. He fought fiercely with Yuan Jun in Huzhou (now Lu County) and Naxi, Sichuan. After Yuan's death, he became the governor and governor of Sichuan. He went to Japan for treatment due to illness in September 1916 and died on November 8. His body was transported back and buried in Yuel Cai E, who became governor after the Yunnan Uprising
