66 years ago today, September 25, 1959 (August 23, 1959 in the lunar calendar), Sri Lanka Prime Minister Bandaranaike was assassinated. Bandaranaike was born into a prominent family in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), which gave him the opportunity to receive a good education. After graduating from St. Thomas's College in Colombo, Bandaranaike entered Oxford University in the United Kingdom to continue his studies and study law. At Oxford University, he was awarded the title "Sword" for his eloquence. In 1923, Bandaranaike graduated with honors and was qualified as a senior lawyer at the Inner Temple Law Society of London. After returning to China, he worked as a lawyer for two years before abandoning the law and entering politics. Since Bandaranaike entered politics, he has been actively engaged in the national liberation movement. Ceylon at that time was a British autonomous territory, and the government pursued a policy of "worshipping the West." In 1951, Bandaranaike disagreed with other leaders of the United Kuomintang on issues such as Sinhala language, Buddhism, national culture and national medicine, so he angrily withdrew from the ruling United Kuomintang and resigned as government minister and party leader. He also founded the Ceylon Liberal Party, which firmly advocated the demolition of the British naval and air bases in Ceylon, and the nationalization of foreign banking companies so that Ceylon truly became an independent country. In 1952, Bandaranaike was elected leader of the House Opposition. In the April 1956 general election, the People's United Front led by the Liberal Party defeated the United National Party, and the Liberal Party Chairman Bandaranaike became Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Minister of Foreign Affairs. After Bandaranaike came to power, he put forward eight political proposals, including getting rid of the British Commonwealth and establishing an independent republic; Nationalize major enterprises that determine the national economy and people's livelihood; develop industry and eliminate dependence on foreign countries; collect land to meet farmers 'demands; ban foreigners' monopoly on commerce and trade, etc. His ideas greatly inspired the national sentiment and were deeply supported by the Ceylon people. However, the implementation of these measures harmed the interests of Britain, the United States and those within the United Kuomintang who represent the big landlords and the big bourgeoisie. They put hatred into action. On the morning of September 25, 1959, Bandaranaike received visitors at the Prime Minister's official residence as usual. Among the visitors were two monks dressed in cassock. When Bandaranaike came out to salute them, a monk suddenly took out a pistol from under his robe and fired six shots at Bandaranaike. The murderer was caught red-handed. Bandaranaike, who was seriously injured, was taken to the hospital. After examination, four bullets penetrated his liver and spleen. The next morning, Bandaranaike passed away due to his severe injuries and ineffective rescue. The murder was an organized and premeditated coup. It involves not only leading figures in the Buddhist community and cabinet members in the government, but also spies from the intelligence agencies of the United States and Britain. They not only planned a plan to assassinate Prime Minister Bandaranaike, but also drew up a new list of cabinet members. Because the conspirators held important positions, the investigation work was obstructed in every way. With sincere feelings for Prime Minister Bandaranaike, the people of Ceylon unanimously demanded that the murderer and his supporters be severely punished. On the first anniversary of Bandaranaike's death, the murderers were finally severely tried and got their due end. The Liberal Party won the general election in July 1960, and Bandaranaike's wife, Sirmavo Bandaranaike, inherited her husband's legacy and assumed the important responsibility of Prime Minister of the Republic of Ceylon.
