Musician Gustav Mahler passed away on May 18, 1911
On this day, 114 years ago, on May 18, 1911 (April 20, 1911), musician Gustav Mahler died. On May 18, 1911, the Bohemian composer and orchestra conductor Mahler died at the age of 50 after months of suffering from lung disease. After graduating from the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory, Mahler became the conductor of the Royal Opera in Budapest at the age of 28. Later he went to Hamburg and Vienna as conductor. In 1967 he crossed the ocean to the United States, where he was conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera.
