Twenty-seven years ago today, on June 25, 1998 (May 2, 1998), US President Clinton visited China. On June 27, after the official talks between the leaders of China and the United States, Jiang Zemin and the visiting Clinton expressed their views on seeking common ground while reserving differences and developing cooperation when they jointly met with Chinese and foreign journalists. On June 25, 1998, US President Clinton arrived in Xi'an for a nine-day official visit to China. This was his first visit to China after five years in the White House and the first visit by a sitting US president since Bush's visit to China in February 1989. On the 27th, at the square outside the east gate of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, President Jiang Zemin presided over a ceremony to welcome Clinton's visit. The two sides reached consensus on China and the United States not targeting each other with strategic nuclear weapons under their respective control and further strengthening bilateral relations and exchanges and cooperation in various fields. President Jiang Zemin stressed that the improvement and development of Sino-US relations are hard-won and the result of the joint efforts of the two governments and people, which should be cherished. World public opinion believes that the world-renowned talks between President Jiang Zemin and President Clinton will further enhance Sino-US relations, promote regional stability and world peace. President Clinton's visit to China has several new changes worth mentioning: the Sino-US summit meeting was broadcast nationwide for the first time through CCTV, President Clinton gave a speech at Peking University, and students from Peking University asked him sharp questions; Clinton went to the radio studio to communicate with the audience during his stay in Shanghai.
