On December 15, 1993, China's first submarine optical cable - a 1,252-kilometer-long China-Japan submarine optical cable from Shanghai Nanhui to Miyazaki, Kyushu, Japan, was officially opened. The total communication capacity of this submarine optical cable system reached 7,560 communication circuits, which is equivalent to more than 15 times that of the Sino-Japanese submarine coaxial cable built in 1976.
