China-Myanmar Border Treaty was signed on October 1, 1960
On this day, 65 years ago, October 1, 1960 (August 11, 1960 in the lunar calendar), the China-Myanmar Border Treaty was signed. On October 1, 1960, China and the Government of the Union of Myanmar signed the Border Treaty between the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Union of Myanmar in Beijing. The two countries "agreed that the long-standing border issue between the two countries is a problem left over from history." The two governments "overcame various difficulties through friendly consultations, mutual understanding and mutual accommodation in accordance with the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, and finally successfully and comprehensively resolved the border issue between the two countries." There are 12 articles in the treaty, the main contents are as follows: (1) Both parties agree to delimit the undetermined boundary from Jian Shan to the western end of the China-Myanmar border in accordance with traditional customs, except for the Panma, Gulang and Gangfang areas, and confirm the demarcation principle from Jian Shan to the southeastern end of the China-Myanmar border;(2) Myanmar agrees to return the Panma, Gulang and Fanggang areas belonging to China to China; (3) The two sides decided to abolish Myanmar's "permanent lease" relationship with the Mengmao Triangle belonging to China. China agreed to transfer this area to Myanmar, and Myanmar agreed to transfer the Banhong and Banlao tribal areas belonging to Myanmar in accordance with the 1941 Exchange of Letters on Border Affairs in Southern Yunnan and Myanmar between China and Britain to China;(4) In order to facilitate the respective administrative management of both parties and take into account the tribal relations and production and living needs of local residents, both parties made some fair and reasonable adjustments to a small section of the boundary drawn by the exchange of letters in 1941; (5) China waives China's right to participate in the operation of Myanmar furnace house mineral enterprises as stipulated in the exchange of letters in 1941. The treaty came into effect on January 4, 1961. The signing of the China-Myanmar Border Treaty and the formal delineation of the entire border between the two countries not only marked the further expression of friendly relations between the two countries, but also made a great contribution to maintaining peace in Asia and the world. It also provides a good example for my country to resolve border issues with neighboring countries.
