Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On August 2, 1914, the First World War broke out in full swing
111 years ago today, on August 2, 1914 (June 11, 1914), the First World War broke out in full force. The strong Belgian army defended their homeland against the German invaders. The Great War (July 28, 1914 - November 11, 1918) was an unjust and imperialist war of plunder. On August 2, 1914, German troops invaded Belgium and France, dragging these two countries, and later Britain, Serbia, and Montenegro, into the German-Russian conflict, thus turning the whole of Western Europe into a major battlefield. An international treaty of 1839 had established Belgium as a neutral country. However, the German Chancellor, while acknowledging that Germany would break the treaty, defended Belgium's cooperation with France and issued an ultimatum to Belgium: allow German troops to enter Belgian soil or go to war with them. Belgium refused this request. On August 2, Germany declared war on Belgium and immediately invaded Belgium. The West acted immediately. King Albert of Belgium sent a telegram to King George of England asking for assistance. The telegram said: "I implore the diplomatic intervention of His Majesty's government in order to preserve the territorial integrity of Belgium." Great Britain responded by issuing an ultimatum to Germany: respect Belgium's neutrality or Britain will go to war. The Kaiser rejected the ultimatum, arguing that Britain would not bleed over "a scrap of paper" like the Treaty of 1839. On the 4th, the British House of Commons allocated $525 million as military expenditure to declare war on Germany. Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Edward-Grey called for an alliance between Belgium and France, saying: "We cannot stand idly by." Meanwhile, Germany claimed that French planes had bombed Germany. It was clear that France was a victim of German propaganda. France mobilized its troops, fearing that a powerful German army might enter her territory. On the 2nd, German troops did cross the French border without declaring war, and some speculated that this would lead France to fall into the trap of the long-vaunted Schlieffen plan. The plan included spreading the war to the French front lines. Thus the war between the two countries broke out. The Belgian army, with the help of Britain and France, did a great job fighting the German invaders. On the 6th, in Amsterdam, the Belgian army killed and wounded 3,500 Germans. At the same time, fierce fighting broke out in Liege near Amsterdam. According to reports, 25,000 of a 100,000 German army died at the hands of only 30,000 Belgians. The battle once again proved how cruel war is; the result of the battle was that there were no copies of the common people. The German press denied the death toll, instead claiming that their cavalry had shown "unparalleled heroism". The German government brought heavy artillery to the front line and bombarded the Belgian fortresses violently. After two weeks of fighting, Germany forced Belgium to surrender. The momentum of the early Belgian resistance gradually faded as German troops advanced fiercely along the 150-mile Belgian front. Austria enters the war: The picture shows the 98th Infantry Regiment of the Austro-Hungarian Empire assembled in Visokmito, East Bohemia (now Czechoslovakia), and then moved to the front line. Belgian refugees took refuge in neutral Holland. These refugees were part of the heavy price paid by the countries involved in the war. Serbian troops marched to the front lines.
