Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On September 16, 1919, the Awareness Society organized by Zhou Enlai was established
106 years ago today, on September 16, 1919 (July 23, 1919), the Awakening Society, which Zhou Enlai organized and participated in, was established. Members took a group photo, with Zhou Enlai on the right in the back row and Deng Yingchao on the third from the right in the front row. In the "May Fourth" patriotic movement, the organization of male and female students in Tianjin was separate. As the struggle deepened, the backbone of the student movement urgently felt the need to break down the boundaries between men and women and establish a unified organization. Therefore, on September 16, 1919, the Awakening Society was born. At that time, there were 20 members, half male and half female. They included Zhou Enlai, Deng Yingchao, Guo Longzhen, Ma Jun, Liu Qingyang, Chen Zhidu, etc. This organization is relatively strict, and the development of new members must be introduced by more than three members, which is decided by all members. Criticism and self-criticism were also carried out within the club. They abolished names externally and decided the code name of each person by drawing lots. For example, when Zhou Enlai caught No. 5, the code name was "Wu Hao"; when Deng Yingchao caught No. 1, the code name was "Yi Hao". In January 1920, the club founded "Awakening", which only published one issue. Among them, "Declaration of Awakening" was written by Zhou Enlai. Soon, Zhou Enlai, Guo Longzhen and others were arrested for leading the student movement, and the Awakening Society went underground.
