On June 24, 1901, the work of the young Spanish painter Pablo Picasso was first exhibited in the trendy gallery of Ambois Vora on Rue Lafayette. A well-known critic commented: "It is clear that Picasso was a veritable artist who was passionate about the color of things." Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881 and came to Paris in October 1900. Although he often went hungry, he was fascinated by Montemarta's street life and did much research on the poor in Paris.
