On this day, 28 years ago, on October 27, 1997 (September 26, 1997 in the lunar calendar), my country signed the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. On the afternoon of October 27, 1997, Qin Huasun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, signed the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on behalf of the China government at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Ambassador Qin Huasun said at the signing ceremony that China, as a member of the United Nations, has always actively participated in the work of the United Nations in promoting and protecting human rights and spoke highly of the positive significance of international human rights conventions in protecting human rights. He called China's signing of this international convention an important action taken after careful study. It once again demonstrates that China is willing to work with other countries in the world to conduct dialogue and cooperation on human rights on the basis of equality and mutual respect, and to make continuous efforts to promote the development of the cause of human rights. Qin Huasun Yan pointed out that the Taiwan authorities 'signing of the Convention in the name of China on October 5, 1967 was illegal and invalid. This Convention was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1966. It is another important international human rights instrument after the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. From the perspective of safeguarding collective human rights, the Convention clearly stipulates the responsibilities and obligations of governments in safeguarding and promoting economic, social and cultural rights.
