On this day, 76 years ago, May 17, 1949 (April 20, 1949, the lunar calendar), Chiang Kai-shek hijacked gold and silver to Taiwan. On May 17, 1949, Tang Enbo obeyed Chiang Kai-shek's orders and personally sent people to seize more than 198,000 taels of gold and 1.2 million yuan of silver dollars from the Central Bank by force. Starting from December 1, 1948, the Chiang Kai-shek clique began to plunder and transport large amounts of gold and silver to Taiwan. A total of more than 2.775 million taels of gold and 15.2 million yuan of silver were shipped to Taiwan in three batches from the Central Bank of Shanghai's former National Government. The first and main batch was shipped from Shanghai at midnight that day, and the entire Bund was under martial law. The total amount of this batch of gold was more than 2.004 million taels. It was loaded by the customs anti-smuggling ship "Haixing" and escorted by the "Meisheng" sent by the Navy Headquarters and transported to Keelung for landing. The second batch transported more than 573,000 taels, which was still loaded by the "Haixing" and escorted by the "Meisheng", and landed in Xiamen. Today is the third batch.
