Thirty-four years ago today, on December 23, 1991 (November 18, 1991 lunar calendar), the first case of consumer reputation rights in our country's mainland. On December 23, 1991, Ni Peilu went shopping at the Wellcome Supermarket opened by the China International Trade Center. After shopping, she was chased out and stopped by the market staff, who took her to the office for questioning. Finally, Ni Peilu was forced to take off her hat, untie her clothes, and open her handbag, which was checked by the staff of Wellcome Supermarket. The staff of the field apologized to Ni Peilu and released her after checking that there was no abnormality. On June 3, 1992, Ni Peilu filed a lawsuit with the Chaoyang District People's Court of Beijing, arguing that the defendants' actions seriously violated their right to reputation. On November 18, 1992, after court mediation, the plaintiff, Ni Peilu, and the defendant, the China International Trade Center, agreed unanimously that the defendant would pay the plaintiff and the plaintiff a compensation fee of 2,000 yuan. This case not only set a precedent for consumers to safeguard their personal dignity, but also directly affected the formulation of the provisions "Consumer's personal dignity is protected by law" in the Consumer Rights and Interests Protection Law on October 31, 1993. On March 10, 2001, the Supreme People's Court's "Interpretation on Several Issues Concerning the Determination of Liability for Compensation for Mental Damage in Civil Tort" was officially promulgated and implemented.
