On September 16, 1987, a fatal accident occurred in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, and about 60 passengers fell into the water. As of 4 pm on the 18th, 34 people had been rescued and escaped, 6 people were killed, and the whereabouts of the remaining passengers were unknown. It is understood that at about 5:20 pm on September 16, shortly after the "Shangmeidu 3" sailing from Shangyang to Meishan Township in Beilun District, Ningbo City left the dock, a large amount of water suddenly entered the rear bottom cabin, causing the ferry to sink rapidly, and about 60 passengers and two walking tractors all fell into the water. According to the provincial shipping management department, the ferry was reported to be suspended several months ago due to the expiration of its sailing period. A few days before the accident, Meishan Township Ferry Station put the ship back into shipping. All three of the ship's drivers, engineers and sailors had no shipping licenses. After the accident, Ningbo City party and government leaders quickly rushed to the scene to organize rescue. The East China Sea Fleet also sent ships to rescue and salvage the news, and sent special ships to help restore navigation in the area.
