September 21, 1998: Flying female Griffith Joyna died suddenly
Twenty-seven years ago today, on September 21, 1998 (August 1, 1998 in the lunar calendar), female trapeze Griffith Joyner died suddenly. G-Joyner of the US team is the most famous "female trapeze" in the world. On September 21, 1998, Griffith Joyner, the American "super female trapeze" and the three-stroke gold medal winner of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, died suddenly at home due to a heart attack at the age of 38. Joyner's husband, Al, the 1984 Olympic triple jump champion, found that his sleeping wife had "stopped breathing" that morning and hurriedly called the police by phone. Al asked for an autopsy on his wife's body to find out the cause of death. It is reported that Joyna suffers from a heart attack and was taken to hospital two years ago when she suffered a heart attack on a flight from California to St. Louis. Ge-Joyna, known as the "flower butterfly", won three gold medals in the women's 100m, 200m and 4X100m relay at the Seoul Olympics; she set the women's 100m 10sec 49 and 200m 21.34 world records that have eluded everyone for 10 years. Even the current US sprinting queen Jones, whose time of 10.65 and 21.62 pales in comparison to Joyna's record. After retiring in 1988, Joyna worked in fashion design, coached children's sports and once practiced marathon running. Before the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, she had the idea of a comeback, but had to give up the plan due to illness and years of old Achilles tendon injuries. Joyner's death shocked international athletics. On September 21, the American flag and the Olympic Committee flag in front of the USOC headquarters were flown at half-mast in mourning. President Clinton heard the news: "Her speed is vertiginous, and her talent makes us ashamed. Even though she stands at the top of the world's sports, she still invests her energy and resources to help children." The Olympic family deeply mourns her death because she was a role model for young athletes, "said USOC President Hybole. "She's one of the greatest athletes in track and field, and it's a huge blow to us that she's gone," said Green Foster, a three-time hurdles world champion. Georgina conquered the world with her amazing speed and dazzling brilliance, and is still remembered for her self-designed bikini one-legged suit and fingernails painted red, white and blue American flag colors. Due to her rapid progress and man-like body shape, there were rumors that she had taken stimulants, but drug tests proved her innocence. G-Joyner set a century record of 10.47 seconds in a striking purple one-legged running suit at the US Olympic trials G-Joyner won the women's 100m gold medal at the Seoul Olympics in 10.54 seconds G-Joyner is known as the "flower butterfly"
