On November 5, 1982, the main dam of the Itaipu Hydropower Station, the world's largest hydropower project jointly built by Brazil and Paraguay, was officially completed. The presidents of the two countries jointly opened the 14 gates of the dam. When Brazilian President Figueiredo and Paraguay President Strosner pressed the special device of the sluice, the surging Parana River water rushed out of the sluice gate and entered the spillway at a speed of 8000 cubic meters per second, stirring up layers of huge waves. Construction of the hydropower station began in 1974 and cost US$14 billion. The hydropower station was partially put into use in 1983. The completion of this hydropower station is a gratifying achievement of mutual cooperation among Latin American countries and the development of the national economy. Itaipu Hydropower Station is built on the Parana River. The dam has a total length of 7 kilometers and a height of 190 meters. When the dam is full of water, the water storage capacity will reach 29 billion cubic meters. A huge artificial lake with a total area of 1350 square kilometers will appear on the river north of the dam. Most of the lake is in Brazil and half of it is in Paraguay.
