Organic chemist Huang Minglong was born on July 3, 1898
On this day 127 years ago, on July 3, 1898 (May 15, 1898 lunar calendar), organic chemist Huang Minglong was born. Huang Minglong (July 03, 1898 - July 01, 1979) Organic chemist. A native of Yangzhou, Jiangsu. Graduated from Yangzhou Middle School in Jiangsu Province in 1917 and Zhejiang Hospital College in 1918. Received a doctorate in chemistry from Berlin University in Germany in 1924. After returning to China in 1925, he served as a professor and director of Zhejiang Medical College. He believes that the traditional Chinese medicine of the motherland is a rich heritage, hoping to use modern science to explore this treasure, so he went to Germany again in 1934, first spent a year in Berlin to do experiments in organic synthesis and analysis, learning new technologies; in 1935, he entered the Institute of Chemistry of the University of Wuerzburg in Germany for further study, under the tutelage of Professor Bruchausen, a famous alkaloid chemistry expert, to study the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine and medicine; after 1938, he went to the German Schering Pharmaceutical Factory to study steroid chemical synthesis, and for the first time discovered the dienone reaction in the production of female hormones. He also studied female hormones at the Middlesex Medical College in the United Kingdom and the University of London in the United Kingdom. After returning to China in 1940, he served as a researcher at He studied the stereochemistry of anti-roundworm drugs and found that the four isomers of the metamorphic mountain year could be transformed in a circle in acid and base, from which the relative configuration of the mountain year and the four metamorphic mountain years could be inferred. From 1945 to 1952, in 1945, at the invitation of Fisher, a steroid chemist at Harvard University in the United States, Huang Minglong went to Harvard University as a visiting professor and later became a researcher at Merck Pharmaceutical Company. When he first arrived at Harvard, in the late stages of World War II, Fisher was still doing wartime service work, researching the synthesis of antimalarial drugs. When Huang Minglong used the "wolf-kishner reduction method" to do the reduction experiment of naphthoquinone intermediates, there was an accident, but he did not abandon it, but continued to do it, and the result was unexpectedly good. He carefully analyzed the reasons, carried out creative transformation of this reduction method, and achieved breakthrough results. The new method was named "Huang Minglong reduction method", which is the first example of an important organic chemical reaction named after scientists in our country, and was written into the textbooks of organic chemistry in various countries. After returning to China in 1952, he served as the director of the Department of Chemistry of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. After 1956, he worked in the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He successively served as a researcher, a member of the Department of Mathematical Physics Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a vice chairperson of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Society. He led the research on synthesis using the seven-step method and assisted the industrial sector to put it into production. He led the development of family planning drugs and made significant contributions to the establishment of the steroid drug industry. For his research on steroid synthesis and steroid reaction, he won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award in 1982. He has published more than 100 papers. Huang Minglong is a representative of the 3rd National People's Congress and a member of the 2nd, 3rd and 5th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
