Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On October 9, 1859, French officer Alfred Dreyfus was born
On this day 166 years ago, on October 9, 1859 (September 14, 1859), the French officer Alfred Dreyfus was born. Dreyfus (Deleifusianjian) was a French political scandal in the late 19th century. Dreyfus (Alfred 1859-1935) was an Alsatian, a captain officer. In 1894, while serving on the French General Staff, he was accused of selling secret documents about new weapons to the German military attache ́ in France. Due to the rampant anti-Semitism in the military at the time, a military court sentenced Dreyfus to life imprisonment under insufficient evidence and was escorted to Devil's Island in French Guiana to serve his sentence. Years later, Colonel Picard of the French Intelligence Service discovered that the real culprit was Major Esther Align, who was born into a Hungarian aristocracy. However, the military transferred Colonel Picard to Tunisia to cover up the truth, and in January 1898, Esther was acquitted of the crime. The revelation of the case attracted widespread public attention, and the famous writer Zola published an open letter to the president, "I charge and dismantle". All walks of life also demanded that Dreyfus be rehabilitated. Different attitudes towards the case evolved into a struggle between two major political forces. In August 1898, Henry, an officer of the French Army Intelligence Service, confessed under pressure of public opinion that he had forged materials about Dreyfus's crimes. He was immediately arrested and committed suicide in prison. The controversy surrounding the case caused political turmoil in France. In 1899, the French bourgeois republicans formed a new government under the slogan "Defend the Republic", attacked the national chauvinists, and asked the Ministry of Justice to reopen the case. However, the military court still found Dreyfus guilty, but reduced the sentence to 10 years. Therefore, the president ordered an amnesty for Dreyfus. It was not until 1906 that the Supreme Court acquitted Dreyfus and restored his reputation. Comment: The famous "Dreyfus injustice" is a war between truth and lies, justice and intolerance.
