May 24, 1893 The birthday of Wang Zhuoran, founder of Jiusan Society
On this day, 132 years ago, May 24, 1893 (April 9, 1893, the lunar calendar), Wang Zhuoran, the founder of the Jiusan Society, was born. Wang Zhuoran was born on May 24, 1893 in an ordinary peasant family in Liandaowan Village, the Urban area of Fushun City. In 1911, he was admitted to Fengtian Normal School. During this period, he joined the Youth Christian Church and met Zhang Xueliang, Yan Baohang, Du Zhongyuan, Lu Guangji and other progressive people in Northeast China and became close friends. In the autumn of 1919, Wang Zhuoran was admitted to Peking Normal University. Two years later, he graduated and returned to Fengtian to serve as an inspector at the Provincial Department of Education. In the autumn of 1923, he received official fees and went to study at Colombia University in New York, USA. In order to allow the American people to have a broad understanding of the history and current situation of China, Wang Zhuoran prepared speeches introducing China's history and Japan's crimes of aggression against China. He delivered speeches in the United States during the holidays, traveling throughout the United States. In August 1928, Wang Zhuoran returned to Fengtian. Zhang Xueliang, who had just taken office, hired him as a professor at Northeastern University and a tutor for his children's adviser to the Security Headquarters of the Three Eastern Provinces. Since then, Wang Zhuoran has gradually become Zhang Xueliang's right-hand assistant. During the September 18th Incident, Wang Zhuoran accompanied Zhang Xueliang to treat his illness in Peiping. On September 27, he and Gao Chongmin, Yan Baohang, Lu Guangji, etc., exiled Northeast patriots who entered the Pass, established the "Northeast People's Anti-Japanese and National Salvation Association" in Peiping and were elected as the executive chairman. The National Salvation Association was secretly supported by Zhang Xueliang and played an important organizational and leading role in the anti-Japanese struggle of the people in Northeast China. The National Salvation Association sent Che Xiangchen, Gao Peng and others to be responsible for liaison with the Northeast Anti-Japanese Volunteers, which effectively guided the Volunteers in their struggle against the enemy. Shortly after the establishment of the National Salvation Association, Wang Zhuoran proposed to establish the "Fuchao" newspaper (the newspaper was later changed to "Oriental Express"), and he was appointed president. The newspaper's main theme is to expose the Japanese militarist aggression against China, criticize the Kuomintang authorities 'non-resistance policy, and reflect the will of the people of Northeast China. In 1937, the "July 7th Incident" occurred. Wang Zhuoran and the leaders of the Northeast Anti-Japanese and National Salvation Association successively went to Chongqing. He was elected as a member of the National Political Council. From the standpoint of resisting Japan, he called on the Kuomintang and the Communist Party to cooperate, unite against Japan, and release General Zhang Xueliang. Wang Zhuoran's proposal was supported by Zhou Enlai, Dong Biwu, Deng Yingchao and other Communist Party politicians. In August 1945, after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Chiang Kai-shek wanted to launch a civil war. Wang Zhuoran joined the "Northeast Political Construction Association" established by Northeast celebrities Ning Wu and Yan Baohang in Chongqing, calling for an end to the civil war and the peaceful construction of China. He, Yan Baohang and others often went to Zengjiayan No. 50 to consult Zhou Enlai. On May 4, 1946, Wang Zhuoran and Xu Deheng and other well-known figures in the scientific and technological and cultural circles initiated the establishment of the "Jiusan Society" to make further efforts for the realization of peace and democracy. In the summer of 1946, civil war finally broke out. Wang Zhuoran saw that there was no hope of peace and went to Japan to engage in trade. After the founding of New China, he sent a letter to Premier Zhou requesting to return to China to work. In May 1951, he went through hardships and resolutely returned to the embrace of the motherland. After Wang Zhuoran returned to China, he used most of his savings to establish two science education centers for children and three kindergartens in Beijing and Tianjin to engage in popular science activities. Premier Zhou Enlai personally arranged for him to serve as a counselor in the Counselor Office of the State Council, engaged in language reform and science popularization work. Wang Zhuoran passed away in 1975. Writer Luo Binji wrote the inscription "Patriotic Spirit Forever" in his book "Wang Zhuoran Historical Materials Collection" commemorating him. This is a high evaluation of Wang Zhuoran's life.
