September 20, 1965-The National Palace Museum in Taipei was established. The National Palace Museum is a large museum located in the Shilin District of Taipei City, Republic of China. It is generally referred to as the Forbidden City, or otherwise called the "Taipei Palace Museum" to distinguish it from the Palace Museum in Beijing. The National Palace Museum mainly collects ancient Chinese cultural relics, books, and documents. It mainly inherits the royal collections from the courts of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, with a total of 655,707 pieces (end of February 2008). Since most of the collections in the museum are treasures handed down from China's dynasties, it is known as a "treasure house of Chinese culture." Some documents call it "among the four major museums in the world," but each has different opinions. The National Palace Museum is a government unit directly under the jurisdiction of the Executive Yuan, and its president enjoys ministerial treatment. According to the Organic Regulations of the National Palace Museum, the National Palace Museum aims to "organize, preserve, and display ancient cultural relics and artworks from the past dynasties collected by the former National Palace Museum in Peking and the National Central Museum Preparatory Office, and strengthen the collection, research, and interpretation of ancient China cultural relics and artworks, with a view to expanding the functions of social education." After moving to Taiwan, the successive presidents were Academician Jiang Fucong, Mr. Qin Xiaoyi, Academician Du Zhengsheng, Dr. Shi Shouqian, and Dr. Lin Manli. The current president is Dr. Zhou Gongxin. In addition to the main courtyard area of Taipei, the government of the Republic of China has also planned the southern courtyard area of the Forbidden City in Taibao City, Chiayi County and near Chiayi Station on the high-speed railway, which is currently under construction.
