Sha Ting, formerly known as Yang Zhaoxi, was also known as Yang Ziqing. His pen name is Sha Ting Yin Guang. A native of An County, Sichuan. In 1921, he entered Chengdu First Normal School to study and loved new literature. In 1927, he participated in revolutionary activities in his hometown. In 1929, he went into exile to Shanghai and founded Xinken Bookstore with friends. He started writing in 1931 and received guidance from Lu Xun. In 1932, he joined the China Left-wing Writers Alliance. Early works include "Routes Outside the Law"(renamed "Routes","Old Man","Postwar", etc. in 1932, intended to reflect the agrarian revolutionary movement and the fierce changes in rural society at that time, but to a certain extent there was a tendency to conceptualize. In 1935, he changed his creative techniques and began to express the Sichuan countryside he was familiar with. He successively published short stories such as "The Murderer","The Beast Road", and "Acting County Magistrate". He achieved achievements and was regarded as a newcomer to left-wing literature. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, he taught at Chengdu Xiejin Middle School and engaged in social activities in the literary and artistic circles. In 1938, he wrote "Air Defense-A Corner of Kamchatka", reflecting the scandals of officialdom in the rear area. Soon he went to Yan 'an to serve as acting director of the Literature Department of Lu Xun Art College. At the end of the year, he followed the troops led by He Long to fight in the northwest Shanxi and the central Hebei Plain. This experience accumulated creative material for the later written "Notes on Accompanying the Army"(i.e."Remembering the Dragon"), the short story "Magnetic Force" and the novelette "The Strange Journey"(i.e."Passing Through the Pass"). After returning to Chongqing in 1940, he published "In Qixiangju Teahouse", which exposed the Kuomintang government's shortcomings on issues such as military service through the infighting of leading figures in the town. It was considered to be his masterpiece. There are also short stories such as "The Recreation of the Director of the Joint Security Bureau","Inspector","Lao Yan's Story", etc. Before and after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War and during the War of Liberation, he wrote short stories such as "Howling","Doctor","Teacher Fan", etc. There are three long stories: "The Gold Rush","The Trapped Beast" and "The Return of the Hometown", with "The Gold Rush" being the most outstanding achievement. Sha Ting used a realistic method to profoundly depict the dark life scenes in rural areas and cities in Sichuan. The expression techniques were rigorous, concise, implicit and profound, and reflected a clear tendency in the objective and calm description. He is good at satirical techniques, has concentrated plots, and is highly dramatic. He expresses his feelings through the description of the relationships between characters in a specific environment. The language of the work is simple, humorous, colloquial, and has a strong local color. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he successively served as deputy director of the Southwest Federation of Literary and Art Circles, deputy director of the Creation Committee of China Writers Association, director of the Institute of Literature of China Academy of Social Sciences, and vice chairman of China Writers Association. The works still mainly reflect rural life in Sichuan. Outstanding works before 1966 include "Lu Jiaxiu","Transition","Chasing Me","Lao Wu","Fishing", etc. After 1976, he published many new works such as "Qingtongpo" and "Muyu Mountain".
