On December 1, 1934, the Red Army lost more than half of its losses in the bloody battle on the Xiangjiang River
91 years ago today, on December 1, 1934 (October 25, 1934 lunar calendar), the Red Army lost more than half of the bloody battle on the Xiangjiang River. On December 1, 1934, the central organs of the Communist Party of China and the main force of the Red Army crossed the Xiangjiang River and broke through the fourth blockade line of the Kuomintang Army. The 34th Division of the Red Fifth Army and the 18th Regiment of the 6th Division of the Red Third Army were blocked on the east bank of the Xiangjiang River, and most of them died; the Red Eighth Army was defeated, leaving only 1/10. So far, the 86,000 of the Red Army at the beginning of the Long March has dropped sharply to more than 30,000, with heavy casualties. On November 25, the Central Revolutionary Military Commission decided that the Central Red Army would be divided into four columns from Xing'an and Quanzhou to grab the Xiangjiang River and go out to the mountainous area west of the Xianggui border. On November 27, the vanguard of the Red Army broke through the fourth blockade line between Xing'an and Quanzhou in Guangxi, began to cross the Xiangjiang River, and took control of the crossing point from the border to the foot of the mountain. The Xianggui and Guangxi armies attacked the two positions in separate directions, and the chasing troops also engaged in fierce battles with the Red Army's rear guard troops. The Red Army lost the opportunity to cross the river due to the fact that they were about 200 miles apart, with too much baggage and very slow movements. Three pontoons were built to cross the river, which sloped along the water. The Red Army, which was not as crowded as the Red Army crossing the river, was crowded on the east bank, and many people swam across the river. The river was full of heads, war horses, floating pots and pans, and cultural textbooks. Kuomintang planes constantly bombed and strafed the river and both sides of the river. The Red Army had nowhere to hide, and the corpses were on both sides of the Artillery, guns, and baggage were abandoned everywhere, and 37 corpses were lying on the edge of a bomb pit. The First Army Corps guarding the foot hill sent a telegram to the Military Commission on November 30 saying: "If the enemy advances with superiority tomorrow, it will be difficult for our army to have absolute certainty of occupation and defense under the current training and equipment conditions. The Military Commission must send the armies east of Xiangshui across the river at night and starry. The 1st and 2nd divisions will continue to resist the enemy tomorrow". The Military Commission replied: "One day of battle is related to all our field troops.... Later, our field army will be cut off layer by layer.... We must mobilize all commanders and fighters to understand the meaning of today's battle. We are not the winners, but the losers." On the night of December 1, the 13th Division of the Fifth Army, without eating for a day and marching 60 miles in combat, ran for another 90 miles in one breath, and crossed the Xiangjiang River at 9 o'clock at night, when the Xiangjiang River was blocked by the Kuomintang army. The 34th Division, which arrived one step late, was separated on the east bank, and the whole division was destroyed. The division commander Chen Shuxiang was seriously injured and captured, and bit his intestines on a stretcher and committed suicide. The Battle of Xiangjiang was a crucial battle for the survival of the entire Central Red Army. After the war, Li Ziren and Bai Chongxi made a documentary "8,000 Prisoners of War" by the Red Army captured by the Gui Army to celebrate the victory of the battle.
