July 12, 1944 The British Army's first jet fighter, the Meteor, enters service
On this day, 81 years ago, July 12, 1944 (May 22, 1944 in the lunar calendar), the British Army's first jet fighter "Meteor" entered service. On July 27, 1944, the Gloucester Meteor fighter began its mission to intercept V-1 missiles. On August 4, pilot Dean intercepted a V-1 missile over Tonbridge. When he ran out of mechanical shells, Dean suddenly lifted one wing tip pad under the V-1 tip. The V-1 missile lost balance and fell. On the same day, pilot Roger shot down another V-1 over Tenterden. Throughout the summer, the 616 Squadron was conducting missions to intercept V-1 missiles. Comment: This was the only jet aircraft that could be used in actual combat during World War II.
