He went to Japan to study in 1903. Joined the China League in 1905. In 1911, he returned to China to participate in the Revolution of 1911. In 1912, at the invitation of Sun Yat-sen, he worked in the Secretariat of the Nanjing Provisional Government. In 1915, he initiated a work-study program for studying in France. Before the May 4th Movement, he organized and participated in the work-study movement in France. In 1923, the Youth Communist Party of China was established in Chengdu. Joined the Communist Party of China in 1925. In 1927, he participated in the Nanchang Uprising and served as a member and secretary-general of the Revolutionary Committee. From 1928 to 1937, he was sent to work in the Soviet Union, France and Western Europe. He served as director of the China Department of Oriental University in Moscow and participated in the Seventh Congress of the Communist International. After returning to China in 1938, he served as Dean of Yan 'an Lu Xun Art Academy, President of Yan' an University, Director of the Cultural and Education Committee of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region Government, Secretary of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, and President of North China University. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as President of Renmin University of China, Director of China Education Trade Union, Director of China Literary Reform Committee, and Member of the Standing Committees of the First to Third National People's Congress. He was elected as a member of the Central Committee at the Sixth Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Seventh and Eighth National Congresses.
