From 1928 to 1937, he was sent to work in the Soviet Union, France and Western Europe. He served as director of the China Department of Oriental University in Moscow and participated in the Seventh Congress of the Communist International. After returning to China in 1938, he served as Dean of Yan 'an Lu Xun Art Academy, President of Yan' an University, Director of the Cultural and Education Committee of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region Government, Secretary of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, and President of North China University.
