On May 19, 1941, Italian troops in Ethiopia surrendered to British troops
Eighty-four years ago today, on May 19, 1941 (April 24, 1941), the Italian army in Ethiopia surrendered to the British army. On May 19, 1941, the British army had forced the surrender of the fascist fortress in Italian East Africa. The Duke of Aosta, the governor general of Italy in East Africa, and his 3,800 soldiers yesterday raised the white flag in Araghi, Ethiopia, and were willing to accept the conditions proposed by the British army, but these conditions should not be made public. Italy currently controls only two areas in East Africa. It is believed that the remaining fascist army will follow suit as a result of the surrender of the duke, known as the soul of the Italian resistance. The capture of Araghi would allow the British to deliver supplies to the front lines in North Africa and the Middle East without hindrance. The British victory came two weeks after Haile Selassie, who had been forced into exile for five years under fascist rule, was re-enthroned.
