On August 30, 2000 (August 2, 2000 in the lunar calendar), the Millennium Conference of Speakers of Parliament of the Inter-Parliamentary Union opened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Millennium Conference of Speakers of Parliament of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (hereinafter referred to as the IPU) was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from August 30 to September 1, 2000. At the invitation of IPU Chairman Hebdulla and Secretary General Johnson, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Li Peng led a National People's Congress delegation to attend. This conference is the largest and highest-level international parliamentary event in the IPU's more than 100 years since its establishment. Such a conference is held at the dawn of the new century and new millennium and has attracted widespread attention from parliaments of various countries. 156 speakers of the Senate and House of Representatives from 142 countries attended the meeting. Chairman Li Peng personally led a delegation to attend this meeting. It was the first time that a chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress had gone abroad to attend a meeting held by the IPU in the 16 years since my country joined the IPU.
