On June 26, 1931, the Nakamura Incident occurred in Northeast China
On this day 94 years ago, on June 26, 1931 (May 11, 1931 lunar calendar), the Nakamura Incident occurred in Northeast China. Japanese Army Staff Headquarters spies Shentaro Nakamura (left) and retired staff sergeant Yotaro Sugiyotaro (right) In June 1931, Japanese Army Staff Captain Shentaro Nakamura was ordered to carry out a secret military reconnaissance mission in Northeast China, accompanied by a retired Japanese cavalry staff sergeant living in Northeast China, a Mongolian and a White Russian. They disguised themselves as Chinese peasants and went to the Sauron Mountain area of Xing'an Ridge to conduct military geographical investigation. On their way back through Taonan, they were detained by the local garrison of the 3rd Regiment of the Chinese Tunnel Reclamation Army (Commander Guan Yuheng) on June 26 at the Su'e Duke Mansion near Kegen Temple in Xing'an District. After a search, "investigation notes and military maps were found in their luggage and Nakamura's cotton pants, as well as cold and summer watches, compasses, surveying and mapping instruments, and a southern-style pistol." Nakamura "used maps to compare the local area, corrected and redrawn, and all the areas he passed through were well recorded about rainfall, climate, villages, residents, soil quality, wells, and the number of troops that could be accommodated." Their evidence of espionage was beyond doubt, and the head of the group, Guan Yuheng, ordered Nakamura and others to be executed. The Japanese authorities immediately used this as a pretext to protest against China on the one hand, and to incite anti-China war fever on the other. Japan held another cabinet meeting, and the Minister of Army, Nanjiro, asked the Chinese side to ensure that similar incidents would not happen again, otherwise Japan would use force. Yoshinori Shirakawa and Takashi Hishikari, former commanders of the Kwantung Army, proposed at the meeting of military counselors that "we should use the opportunity of the Nakamura incident to resort to force, solve all outstanding cases in one fell swoop, and ensure my rights and interests". Jing stressed that the commander of the Kwantung Army should "mobilize troops". Ishihara Kan-er, director of combat staff of the Kwantung Army, believes that "the Nakamura incident is a godsend opportunity to send troops to places other than the subordinate territory, and can even be a prerequisite for the exercise of force at Wicker Lake".
