Since 1903, he has taught at Tongzhou and Suzhou Normal Schools, teaching philosophy and literature. Since 1907, he has been a compiler at the Library Bureau of the Ministry of Education in Beijing, and has been engaged in the study of the history and lyrics of Chinese opera. He has written "Qulu", "The Origin of Opera", "The Examination of Song Daqu" (sorted out into "The Examination of Song and Yuan Opera" during his trip to Japan in 1912) and "The Word of the World", which has opened the study of the history of opera. After the Revolution of 1911, he regarded himself as a veteran of the Qing Dynasty and traveled to Japan for 4 years.
