Breaking-News >> TodayHistory May 28, 1937 Chamberlain became British Prime Minister
Eighty-eight years ago today, on May 28, 1937 (April 19, 1937), Chamberlain became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Neville Chamberlain (1869-1940), a British politician, was a representative of the appeasement policy of the 1930s. Born in Birmingham on March 18, 1869. Elected to the House of Commons in 1918, he has served as Minister of the Post, Minister of Health, and Minister of the Exchequer since 1922, and has been the leader of the Conservative Party. On May 28, 1937, Chamberlain became Prime Minister. At this time, the security of Europe had been threatened by German and Italian fascism. Chamberlain made a series of concessions to Hitler and Mussolini in exchange for peace in Europe. The policy he implemented was later called "appeasement". In 1938, Hitler invaded Austria and then invaded the Czech border. Chamberlain gave a speech in the House of Commons condemning German aggression, but did not take any specific action; instead, he acquiesced in Italy's invasion of Ethiopia and Germany, Italy's armed intervention in Spain, and condoned Japan's invasion of China. During the Sudetenland crisis that followed, Chamberlain flew to Germany twice in September 1938 to meet with Hitler in person. On September 28-30, he met with Hitler, Mussolini, and Daladi in Munich, agreeing to Germany's territorial claims to Czechoslovakia and forcing the Czech government to agree to the Munich Agreement. On September 30, Chamberlain and Hitler signed the Anglo-German Declaration of Non-Aggression. Chamberlain's "appeasement policy" aroused opposition from many at home. After Germany invaded the whole of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, Britain began to take measures to strengthen its defense, and Chamberlain announced that he would give Poland military support. On September 1, Germany invaded Poland, and Chamberlain issued an ultimatum to Germany and declared war on Germany after being rejected by Germany. In the early days of the war, Chamberlain did not effectively organize the whole country to wage war, and there was a "strange war" state of no war on the front lines. On May 10, 1940, German troops invaded the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, directly threatening the security of Britain and France. Chamberlain lifted a stone and hit himself in the foot, and the peace policy was completely bankrupt. On the same day, Chamberlain was forced to step down and make way for Churchill's coalition government. On September 9 of the same year, Chamberlain died of illness.
