Benito Pablo Juárez García (Castilian: Benito Pablo Juárez or translated as "Juárez", March 21, 1806-July 18, 1872) was the President of Mexico (reigned from 1858 to 1872) and a national hero. Born into a Zapotec Indian farmer family in Oaxaca. Worked as a lawyer. Governor of Oaxaca from 1847 to 1852. Participated in the uprising that overthrew dictator Antonio Lopes de Santa Anna in 1854. In 1855, he served as Minister of Justice and Chief Justice in the new government and enacted the Juarez Act, which abolished the privileges of clergy and officers. Juárez became acting president in 1858 and was officially elected in 1861. In 1859, he promulgated the Reform Act, confiscating church property during his term, separating church and state, expelling papal envoys and clergy who disobeyed orders, repelling armed interference by the coalition forces of Britain, France and Spain, and crushing the puppet empire established by France in Mexico, large property power and measures to improve the living conditions of the Indians promoted the rise of national consciousness. Some social reforms have also been carried out that have played a progressive role in Mexican history. From 1864 to 1867, Juarez led Mexico to successfully resist the invasion of French Emperor Napoleon III. In May 1867, he executed the puppet emperor Archduke Maximilian supported by Napoleon III. He established Indian education and suppressed veterans 'riots and Porferio Díaz's rebellion.
