Breaking-News >> TodayHistory August 12, 1848 - Birthday of Stephenson, the founder of modern steam trains
177 years ago today, on August 12, 1848 (July 14, 1848 lunar calendar), the founder of the modern steam car "the father of the train" Stephenson was born. When you sit on the rumbling and speeding train, many people may think that its inventor must be a great scientist who has studied for many years. In fact, Stephenson, known as the "father of the train", was a poor miner, and he was still illiterate at the age of 17. George Stephenson was born on June 9, 1781, to a family of coal miners in Northumberland, England. Due to his family's poverty, he started helping people herd cattle at the age of 8. At the age of 14, his father took him to work in his own mine, and he became an assistant to a steam engine stoker. A day's tiredness often made his back ache and legs ache, so in his heart, he had long buried the desire to innovate machinery for the benefit of his colleagues. No matter how tired the work was, he never took a break in his spare time. He always stayed by the machine, carefully observing and thinking carefully. But he didn't read a day, and he couldn't even understand the markings and instructions on the machine. To make up for his lack of cultural and scientific knowledge, Stephenson started attending night school at the age of 17. Due to his hard work, it didn't take long for him to be able to teach himself various technical books. One day, a machine in the mine suddenly broke down, and several mechanics couldn't find the reason after repairing it for a long time. Then Stephenson came, he circled the machine a few times, and volunteered, "Let me try it out." He removed all the parts, carefully inspected them one by one, repaired the malfunction, and quickly assembled them as they were. The machine was repaired as expected, and the people present gave a roar of approval. Therefore, Stephenson was made an exception and promoted to be the first artisan-turned-engineer in the mine. After becoming an engineer, Stephenson did not stop at the achievements he had made. He was determined to use Watt's steam engine for transportation. He finally built a practical steam locomotive in 1814 after many experiments on the basis of the locomotive model created by his predecessors. This locomotive can pull 30 tons, and also solves the problem of frequent train derailments. But this locomotive has many shortcomings, not only does it go slowly, vibrate violently, and make a lot of noise, but also has a high flame in the chimney. Stephenson continued to experiment and improve. After another 11 years of painstaking research, the world's first passenger and freight steam locomotive "Travel" was finally born. On the early morning of September 27, 1825, the test drive was held on the Darlington Railway in England, the first railway in the world. Stephenson personally drove the "Travel". The locomotive pulled 12 carriages loaded with coal and flour and 20 carriages full of passengers from Ikurain to Darlington Station safely. There were 450 passengers on board at that time, the train carried a total load of 90 tons, and the locomotive reached a maximum speed of 20 to 24 kilometers per hour. The successful test run of the "Travel" opened up a new era of land transportation. In 1829, Stephenson developed the new locomotive "Rocket" and personally drove the racing car. As a result, the "Rocket" won the victory at a top speed of 46 kilometers per hour without any failure. From then on, trains were officially used in transportation. He died on August 12, 1848 at the age of 67 in Chestafield, near Newcastle. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/1nbc.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.27-13:31] 访问:75
