On November 30, 1901, the Qing court removed the name of the eldest brother of Pujun. Pujun is the son of Zai Yi. After the Wuxu coup, Cixi wanted to abolish Emperor Guangxu and establish Pujun, but the foreign powers refused to allow it. In January 1900, Cixi established Pujun as the eldest brother to "rule by Xu". Zai Yi and Zai Xun used the Boxer Rebellion to xenophobic and attacked the embassy in an attempt to force the ministers of various countries to recognize the abolition. The Eight-Power Allied Forces captured Beijing, and Zai Yi and Pujun fled west with Cixi. During the peace talks, Zai Yi was severely punished and was successively seized, dismissed, and sent to Xinjiang.
