Twenty-eight years ago today, on September 9, 1997 (August 8, 1997 in the lunar calendar), I suspended diplomatic relations with Liberia. On September 9, 1997, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Xie Zhiheng announced that the government of the People's Republic of China had decided to suspend diplomatic relations with the Republic of Liberia with immediate effect, and all agreements between the two governments were immediately suspended. On that day, Ambassador Xie Zhiheng lodged stern representations with the Liberian side on the development of official relations between the Liberian government and Taiwan, blatantly creating "two Chinas". He pointed out that the wrong decision of the Liberian government has seriously damaged China's sovereignty, interfered in China's internal affairs, and undermined the foundation of normal diplomatic relations between China and Liberia. The government of the People's Republic of China lodged a strong protest with the Liberian government in this regard. Liberia is located in West Africa, with an area of 111,000 square kilometers and a population of 3.48 million (2005). Its capital, Monrovia, is known as the "rain capital of Africa". On February 17, 1977, it established diplomatic relations with our country. On October 9, 1989, the Doe regime and Taiwan signed a joint communiqué on re-establishing "diplomatic relations". On the 10th, I announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with Liberia. On August 10, 1993, the Chinese government and the Interim Government of National Unity of Liberia signed a joint communiqué on the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. On September 5, 1997, the spokesperson of President Taylor announced that Libya recognized the "two Chinas". On the 9th, I announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with Liberia. On October 11, 2003, the Chinese government and the Liberian government signed a joint communiqué on the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
