Twenty-eight years ago today, on June 1, 1997 (April 26, 1997 lunar calendar), the border between Iraq and Syria was officially opened. The border between Iraq and Syria was officially opened in 1997, and economic and trade personnel and goods from both sides of Iraq and Syria can conduct normal exchanges by land. Saudi Al Hayat quoted Iraqi authoritative sources as saying that there are only three Iraqi-Syrian border crossings currently open: Abu-Shamat and Abu Kemal in eastern Syria, and Tel-Kuzhik in northeastern Syria. The above three crossings are currently limited to trade personnel and goods from the two countries. Residents of both sides cannot cross the border through the open crossings. A large Iraqi trade delegation was invited to visit Syria for specific consultations on further developing economic and trade relations between the two countries. The two sides also held talks on the resumption of oil pipelines connecting the two countries.
