On this day, 31 years ago, on November 14, 1994 (October 12, 1994 in the lunar calendar), Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore was closed for expansion. On November 14, 1994, according to the overall plan of the Beijing City Government, Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore closed its business and began to be renovated and expanded. The expanded Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore is located at the west exit of Dongdan Santiao, still facing Wangfujing Street, adjacent to the newly built Oriental Plaza, and has expanded its area from the current 10472 square meters to 17525 square meters. The newly completed Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore will be an internationally advanced cultural world integrating books and audio-visual products. Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore was built in February 1949. In the 45 years since its establishment, the store has sold a total of 2 billion books, which has had a huge impact in Beijing and even the country. As a window to the capital, Wangfujing Bookstore has made important contributions to the construction of spiritual civilization. The demolition work of Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore has received great attention from the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, received strong support from well-known Hong Kong celebrities such as Li Ka-shing and Tung Chee-hwa, and received keen attention from some well-known figures in the capital, media circles and readers from all walks of life. During the construction of Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore, in order to facilitate readers to purchase books, the bookstore decided to continue to open on the third and fourth floors of the Beijing City Foreign Language Bookstore at the north entrance of Wangfujing in early 1995.
