On this day, 27 years ago, on November 3, 1998 (September 15, 1998, the Chengdu Funan River Project won the United Nations Habitat Award. On November 3, 1998, after multiple projects from multiple countries and repeated reviews by relevant expert jury, the Funan River Comprehensive Improvement Project in Chengdu City won the 1998 United Nations Habitat Award. The Habitat Award is the world's highest award set by the United Nations to honor collectives, individuals and projects that have made outstanding contributions in the field of human settlements development. It is understood that the Fu River and Nanhe River surrounding Chengdu City have been in disrepair for a long time, causing embankments to collapse, river silting, serious pollution, and flooding. People call them "rotten rivers", which seriously restrict the economic and social development of Chengdu City and endanger the lives and health of millions of people along the middle and lower reaches of the Minjiang River. The people have a strong reaction. In 1993, the Chengdu Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government accepted the suggestions of the masses and decided to completely renovate the Funan River. It took five years, with a total investment of 2.7 billion yuan, and nearly 4.5 million square meters of new residential buildings were built, allowing 100,000 residents in shantytowns along the Funan River to move into new homes, greatly improving their living area and environment. At the same time, 18 bridges were built or rebuilt on the Funan River, 5 dams and 12 docks were built, and 16 kilometers of river channels were dredged. The river's flood discharge capacity has doubled, eradicating urban flooding. A number of polluting enterprises moved to industrial areas outside the city for renovation, cutting off pollution sources; a 26-kilometer sewage main pipe was buried along the river to intercept and centrally transport urban industrial wastewater and domestic sewage that were originally directly discharged into the river, which can purify 850 hectares of water in the Urban area. 400 acres of green space have been opened along the river, and the green belt along the river is dotted with small scenic gardens with unique characteristics. Garden sketches and sculptures are distributed in the gardens, which has greatly changed the appearance of the city. In addition, a total of 41 kilometers of river protection channels have been built, easing tight traffic in the city. Today, the Funan River has become a new scenic spot for Chengdu citizens to take leisure walks.
