On October 6, 2000, China pilots crossed the tunnel of Taihu Lake Bridge
On October 6, 2000 (September 9, 2000 in the lunar calendar), China pilots crossed the tunnel of the Taihu Lake Bridge. From 3:30 pm to 3:45 pm on October 6, 2000, four batches of heroic China aerobatic pilots successfully crossed the tunnel of the No. 1 Bridge of Taihu Bridge, the first bridge in Neihu in China, adding a new brilliance to the history of world aviation sports. At 3:29 pm, 38-year-old Yang Shangfeng from Guangxi Aviation Sports School and 39-year-old Jin Liang (co-pilot) from Xinjiang Aviation Association first flew a domestically produced Haiyan 650B light aircraft to the bridge. They made two rounds over the bridge, then aimed at the main bridge hole, and successfully crossed in one go, leaving a beautiful colored smoke under the bridge. The main bridge hole of Taihu Bridge No. 1 Bridge located in Wu County, Suzhou City has a net width of 34.91 meters and a net height of less than 6 meters. The Haiyan 650B aircraft has a wingspan of 14.95 meters and a height of 2.65 meters. The successful crossing of Yang Shangfeng and Jin Liang aroused cheers among more than 100,000 spectators. Immediately afterwards, Zhao Jinguang, a pilot from Baoding Aviation Sports School in Hebei Province, and Wang Jian 'an, a pilot from Datong Aviation Training Base in Shanxi Province, flew in the domestic Bee-3C and AD-100T aircraft respectively and crossed the bridge hole amidst the applause of the audience. At 3:44 pm, Beijing Keyuan Aircraft Company pilot Li Weiguo and Beijing Light Cavalry Flight Club pilot Lin Hong each flew an AD-200 aircraft and formed a "two"-shaped formation in the air to approach the bridge. While Li Weiguo's lead plane crossed through the main bridge hole, Lin Hong's wingman also successfully crossed through the bridge hole on the left side of the main bridge hole. The clear width of this bridge hole is only 26.75 meters. Their wonderful performance brought a successful end to the entire aerobatic flying performance across the Taihu Lake Bridge, and also made the audience excited and obsessed. Jurgis Keres, a professional aerobatic pilot from Lithuania, and Peter Besenye, an aviation performer from Hungary, won the championship and runner-up respectively in the "2000 China Wuxian Lake World Aerobatic Grand Prix" that ended yesterday.
