SADC is a regional organization with a high level of economic integration and development on the African continent, covering a total population of 247 million and a total GDP of more than US$430 billion. After the completion of the free trade zone, SADC plans to realize a customs union in 2010, establish a common market in 2015, establish a regional central bank and realize a monetary union in 2016, and implement a unified currency in 2018.
