On August 1, 1955, China and the United States held their first ambassadorial talks
On this day, 70 years ago, August 1, 1955 (June 14, 1955, the lunar calendar), China and the United States held their first ambassadorial talks. On August 1, 1955, the first meeting of ambassadorial talks between China and the United States was held at the League of Nations Building in Geneva. Prior to this, during the Geneva Conference held from April to July 1954 to resolve the Korean and Indochina issues, after the arrangement of the then British Chargé d'affaires in China, China and the United States sent representatives to discuss the issue of the two countries 'nationals. Preliminary discussions were held in Geneva on June 5, 10, 15 and 21. In April 1955, while attending the Asian-African Conference in Indonesia, Zhou Enlai declared to the world: "The China government is willing to sit down and negotiate with the U.S. government, especially on easing tensions in the Taiwan region." On July 13, the U.S. government proposed to the China government through the United Kingdom that China and the United States send representatives at the ambassadorial level to hold meetings in Geneva. The China representative attending the first ambassadorial talks between China and the United States was China's Ambassador to Poland Wang Bingnan, and the United States representative was U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic A. Johnson. The two sides reached an agreement on the agenda of the meeting: ① the issue of repatriation of nationals of both sides;② other practical issues on which the two sides had disputes. At the 14th meeting held on September 10 of the same year, representatives at the ambassadorial level of China and the United States reached an agreement on the return of civilians from both sides and issued the "Statement of the Ambassadors 'Agreement between the People's Republic of China and the United States of America on the Return of Civilians." The "statement" said that both sides believe that those of the other country who are willing to return to their country "enjoy the right to return, and announced that they have taken and will continue to take appropriate measures to enable them to exercise their right to return as soon as possible." Subsequently, the talks entered the second class. Due to the lack of sincerity of the United States, the meeting never made progress and the talks were suspended after the 73rd meeting held on December 12, 1957.
