On July 8, 2001 (May 18, 2001 in the lunar calendar), Jia Lanpo, a famous Paleolithic archaeologist in my country, passed away. A famous Paleolithic archaeologist, paleoanthropologist, and Quaternary geologist in my country; a senior academician of China Academy of Sciences, a foreign academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, and an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences. He was a legendary figure who climbed to the top of the science palace without a college degree. Jia Lanpo, also known as Yusheng, used the pen names Jia Yusheng, Zhou Long, and Lan Jiugong. Born on November 25, 1908 (the second day of November 34, 1908) in Xingjiawu Village, Yutian County, Hebei Province. He graduated from Beijing Huiwen Middle School in 1929 and entered the Cenozoic Research Office of the Institute of Geological Survey of China in 1931 to participate in the excavation of the Peking Man Site in Zhoukoudian. He successively served as trainee, trainee, and technician assistant. He served as an investigator in 1937 and was renamed technician in 1945. He joined the Jiusan Society in 1950. Member of the 7th Central Committee of the Jiusan Society. In 1955, he succeeded Mr. Pei Wenzhong in presiding over the excavation work of Zhoukoudian, and his work was excellent. After Pei Wenzhong discovered the first skull in 1929, he successively discovered three "Beijingman" skulls in November 1936, shocking the international academic community. After the founding of New China, he served successively as associate researcher, researcher, academic member of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, China Academy of Sciences, academic member of the Institute of Archaeology, China Academy of Social Sciences, and member of the Department of Biology and Geosciences, China Academy of Sciences. He has served concurrently as deputy director of the Cenozoic Research Office of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, director of the specimen room, and director of the Zhoukoudian Workstation. He is also deputy director of the Quaternary Geology and Glacier Professional Committee of the Geological Society of China, and vice chairman of the Chinese Archaeology Society. Chairman, vice president and secretary-general of the China Pacific Historical Society, and member of the National Cultural Relics Commission of the Ministry of Culture. In 1979, Jia Lanpo, Wei Qi and others studied the Xujiayao Paleolithic cultural site, and believed that Xujiayao culture was a transitional bridge between the "Peking Man" culture and the Zhiyu culture in terms of the tradition of fine chronicle technology, and discussed the two major traditions of microtools around the world. Theoretical issues such as the origin and distribution of microtools are discussed. In 1978, Jia Lanpo systematically summarized the research on microliths and published "Characteristics of microliths in China and Its Origin and Distribution", which advanced microliths research in China a big step forward and was supported by American archaeologists. American scholars believe that it is a guide for North American archaeology. In 1980, he was elected as an academician of China Academy of Sciences; in 1994, he was elected as a foreign academician of the National Academy of Sciences; in 1996, he was elected as an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences. Jia Lanpo died of illness in Beijing on July 8, 2001 at the age of 93. On November 25, 2003, the exhibition of Jia Lanpo's life stories was grandly held at the Peking Man Relics Museum in Zhoukoudian. At the opening ceremony, Jia Lanpo's son Jia Yuzhang delivered a speech in memory of his beloved father. After the red curtain was removed, Jia Lanpo's bronze bust was displayed side by side with the statue of Pei Wenzhong, the first skull discoverer of "Beijingers" and Yang Zhongjian, the founder of vertebrate paleontology in China, in the lobby of the Beijingers Site Museum. Jia Lanpo has done many research on Quaternary geology, vertebrate paleontology, ancient humans and archaeology, and has made the most remarkable achievements in the archaeology of Paleolithic.
