During the Liberation War, he served as the English translator of the CCP delegation of the Executive Department of the Military Mediation Office. Later, he went to Northeast China to participate in land reform and wrote the novel "Storm and Rain". This novel won the third prize of the Stalin Literary General and was elected as a member of the All-China Federation of Literary and Art Circles After the founding of New China, he served as a deputy to the First, Second, and Third National People's Congress, a director of the Chinese Writers Association, the chairperson of the Hunan Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and a member of the Fifth National Political Consultative Committee.
